Catching the Last Rays of Civilisation #6

Just show up. The best advice I have ever been given. On a side note, I have learnt the hard way that giving people advice is a fairly thankless task. I used to get so frustrated when you gave someone your advice (especially when, in all fairness, someone had sought out your two-penneth), recommendation, or guidance and they did nothing with it. I’m here to proffer my suss, what you do with it is up to you. It’s the same with books, records or film recommendations – mostly they won’t bother, no matter how insightful your recommendation is. Just an observation.

Most jobs I took on, I sucked at. At the outset I sucked, that’s the important part. But you just show up. You show up and make the mistakes. You learn from the mistakes and you keep showing up. Then you make more advanced mistakes and you learn from them. You keep showing up and you make less mistakes, then you become the one that people come to because they made the mistakes you made, and now they need some advice. And you keep showing up.

You keep showing up in your relationships, with your connections, and with pretty much any situation you find yourself in. Just show up and be present. The here and now are all that exist. So show up for the moment, because that moment is all you really have. The future is unwritten, because there is no future, there is only now. So show up for ‘now’. That’s not some hippy-dippy, pseudo Buddhist woo nonsense, either. That’s the only way to roll. Many a philosopher has come to that very conclusion I am now peddling to you. Show up for the now and be present.

Just show up.
