DIGITAL NOMAD – TOOLS OF THE TRADE #3 – Cloud Storage

So, we’ve organised ourselves with a handy To-Do list, and then ensured we have something prodding and poking us with some useful notifications. So the next step is to ensure we can keep working. Storage of our files is really important so we need a solution to ensure we can get access to our files, providing we have a connection to the internet. Thank goodness for the cloud. (We’ll deal with offline storage at a later date.)

Dropbox was the go-to solution for a long time, but since Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive have massively upped their games, and with the integration with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace respectively, it has become a two-horse race for many people. I find it difficult to pick a winner between these two. I do use both, for a variety of work-related reasons, and I really can’t see picking any of these as a losing option. I have a Microsoft Office subscription so OneDrive comes free, and it provides more than enough storage for my needs plus I can hide crucially important files in the Vault. Google Drive offers a similar secure facility.

There are a couple more considerations to add in to the mix. Searching for files is much more efficient on Google Drive. As you type what you’re searching for in the search bar, Google will populate results similar to how it does in it’s search engine. OneDrive won’t do a thing until you hit enter. So Google makes searching easier. Obviously you are the sort of digital nomad who is horrendously organised, so this might not be a huge plus point for you, right?

The other consideration is that OneDrive is integrated into your windows desktop, so integration is a little more, er, integrated. Google Drive bolts on nicely, so much so I don’t really see a difference but others I discuss this with prefer OneDrive for the integration aspect. Horses for courses.

For me, there is little between the two solutions. As I said, I use both for work purposes, and I really like both. Either way, you need some form of cloud storage to remain digitally nomadic. Choose wisely.
