DIGITAL NOMAD – TOOLS OF THE TRADE #4 – Backup and Access

You can’t always rely on the cloud. You’re not always guaranteed an internet connection. Sometimes, you just need a good, old fashioned backup to get hold of your data. Definitely backup to a memory stick. Preferably twice. Let me introduce you to the 3, 2, 1 of backups. Stop me if you’ve heard this before. (There are variations on the 3, 2, 1 approach to backups, but this is the OG version).

So you need three copies of the data, on two different media (try two different memory sticks, or maybe a memory stick and a data card) and one copy off-site. Or in our instance it would have to be the cloud, or leave a memory stick with someone. This later part becomes problematic if you’re of the nomadic persuasion. But having backups that aren’t reliant on the cloud are obviously great for security but also useful if you need the data and you can’t connect to the cloud. Automating this process and ensuring everything is synced is crucial, and we’ll look into that soon.
