CATCHING THE LAST RAYS OF CIVILISATION #13 : Agency

Hey, good to see you. Are you well? Is it all working out? I’m sure it is. It’ll be fine. It usually is. There’ll be a few bumps in the road, but that’s how it goes. If only we’d just get out of our own damn way we’d be fine. Just get on with it. Stop thinking too much about it. Just go for it. You have more agency than you realise. Life shouldn’t be happening to you, you should be making it happen. Life should be twisting itself around to your bidding… if only you’d get out of your own head and stop overthinking.

A case in point: I am the master of unfinished projects. I mean truly Olympic level mastery. Or rather I used to be. Previously I’d get a great idea, I’d start mapping that out, then I’d think too much, get bogged down in research mode, and then it would just grind to a halt. Then I’d get a great idea… rinse and repeat. ( I have a book of great ideas. It is a dedicated book just for noting the ideas. More on that again). You just have to get out of your own head, stop thinking about it and just get on with it.

What changed for me recently in regard to this was working through The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. The “Morning Pages” is an exercise where you sit down (ideally first thing in the morning) and just write three pages of absolutely anything. It really helps just clear your head of all the stuff that seems to get in the way of doing anything creative. We just need to find the tools to help us get out of our own way and rediscover the true agency that we have. (now, just as I am typing this, WordPress is trying to Autosave, and failing by the seems of it. It has this little glitch that sometimes it gets in its own way and fails to autosave and you lose your work because WordPress won’t let you do anything else. This is the Universe saying to me; yeah, you have agency. Some, but not with everything. Fair point. I better copy and paste this to a Word document for safe keeping….)

Now, my book on digital marketing is almost done. Just some tightening up of the text, a cover and it’s all good. This time I just got out of my own way and just turned up and Did The Work. That’s what you’re meant to do; The Work.
