Catching The Last Rays of Civilisation #22 :: Three Rules

Hey, you still holding up? You dealing with ongoing slide towards human collapse? Sure, it’ll be ok…

In these times, you can just hold onto those values or guiding principles that have got you thus far. Whilst remaining human, and all those wonderful positive principles that come with it, just what do you stand for? What are the basic principles that have made you happy or brought you success? I recently came across the Three Rules shortform podcast. (Firstly, I love the format: just straight to the point. How many more podcasts must there be where a bunch of people just chat nonsense for three hours at a time? Secondly, as it’s Australia-based, you get to listen to a lot of people you probably wouldn’t normally get to listen to.)

With this in mind, I pondered on what my Three Rules, are?

  1. Show Up/Do The Work – Whether it’s a new job, a chat with your loved one, popping round to see your folks, whatever it is, Show Up. Not just in the physical sense but in the sense of fully committing to that time, that connection, that discussion, that project. I have been in some many situations where I felt out of my depth or uncomfortable (especially in new jobs or ventures), but by just showing up, remaining locked in to whatever it was I was doing, made things easier, made progress quicker next time. It also made me enjoy whatever it was because you get out what you put in.
  2. Be Nice – I am sometimes criticised for being “too nice”. But being nice doesn’t mean you have to be a pushover. You can still have strong bounderies and be nice. Being nice allows you to look in the mirror every day and know you’ve done the right thing. Being nice also applies to you. It is especially important when dealing with yourself. Yes, you’ve made mistakes, but who hasn’t. Just Be Nice.
  3. Have A Plan/Trust The Process – Whatever you’re doing or aiming to do, have a plan. It’s just less stressful. Create a plan then trust the process.

While you’re hear, go listen to this podcast. It’ll tell you the future of social media. Listen to it right until the end. You’ll thank me later.
