Catching The Last Rays of Civilisation #24 :: The New, New, New Normal – The Threat Level Just Changed

Hey, how’s things? Are you holding it down? Are you finding a way through the next phase of planetary crisis? How is this season of “Humanity” working out for you? However you’re holding it together, just be good to yourself, as there are tough times ahead….

We’re post-pandemic, post-truth, post-democracy, post-human, the new, new, new, new normal doesn’t seem very normal. But hey, let’s step back a bit. How much of this is just induced psychosis via the media? Are things really that bad? Yes. Yes they really are. Hungary has banned public events for gay people. The US is thinking about deporting US citizens. The US wants to monitor people with Autism. Police Departments are buying AI bots whose sole job is to surveil people. ICE are using very sophisticated systems to monitor and surveil vast amounts of people. People are being refused entry to the US because they have criticised Donald Trump online. Don’t say we’re not larping Germany circa 1939. Your personal threat level just changed.

As we have long suspected, and we have the receipts, all the data we currently leak, via all those wonderful apps we use, is being used for very nefarious ends. Your threat level just changed.

Now, I am not saying dtich Facebook, Insta etc etc etc (although, let’s acknowledge way too much time we spend staring into the social media abyss, and the online abyss is certainly staring back at us and tracking our data) I am just suggesting that either you become much more aware of what you are using these apps for, or you might have to create seprate identites for your online activities. You might have to bolster your online security and infrastructure. This isn’t fear-mongering. This is savvy advice. For example, this little snippet arrived courtey of The TOR Project, and it might be useful to you, but it also show just how bads things are.

“When digital surveillance threatens reproductive freedom, privacy and anonymity are the last line of defense. That’s why Repro Uncensored and the Tor Project teamed up to launch a censorship-resistant .onion site—ensuring access to reproductive health information and protecting bodily autonomy in the digital age without fear of criminalization.

“At Repro Uncensored, we receive reports every day from organizations and individuals who run into barriers trying to access or share reproductive health information. It can come with serious risks – especially for people in hostile legal environments. We partnered with Tor because we trust its long-standing commitment to privacy and resistance to censorship. Tor allows us to keep information available for those who need it most, without exposing them to surveillance and risk of criminalization. I think of Repro Uncensored as both a shield and a space to experiment – a place where we can test censorship-resistant infrastructure and privacy-preserving practices that can be adapted by other organizations and movements navigating similar threats.”

Whilst most of this points to changes in the US, what changes in the US ripples through to the rest of the world. Just look at the Tariffs debacle. One man’s actions impacts your pension, plus a whole host of other things. After just 100 days, the US looks like a totally different country. One of the worst things to think is that none of this could happen whereve you are. It’s time to assess the threat and make some changes.
